Cymatics is the study of visible soundwaves. The idea is simple, when you have a thin film/membrane/diaphragm the material will distort. The regions of maximum distortion will correspond to the peaks and valleys of the sound waves. This also can be easily viewed in viscous liquids and gases (the ruben's tube).
